It took a few days but I worked it out. I didn't want to use watercolor ground unless absolutely necessary. For all intent purposes that stuff is actually acrylic paint. I try to paint work that will last a lifetime. Watercolor paintings can do that, but they will eventually yellow some. If I used watercolor ground, that stuff would not yellow and would become noticeable over time. So I decided to use gouache instead. It is opaque watercolor and didn't take as long as I expected to get the right color. It still looks odd, but then the glasses are odd.
