I have stopped shading the face for now. Besides needing lipstick, eyelashes, eyebrows and hair, there are subtle things that need to be done. I don't know how to explain this exactly, but I first must have the subject's sweater and scarf in place because their coloring will affect the facial shading. (It is a Hans Hoffman thing.)

I put maskoid on the design pattern of the sweater so it would remain white. Then I turned the painting upside down and put painters' tape along the edge. I also covered areas that I might accidentally drip paint on. I painted each arm separately starting with a round #8 Kolinsky series 7 brush at the widest point. Down near the sleeve I used a #6 round brush. (I have never been comfortable with flat brushes.)The first layer of paint is a light blue just to get rid of the white. It was a combination of Phthalo blue, Winsor blue, Ultramarine Blue and Neutral black.
