How to make hair in watercolor.
First of all, I hate doing it. It takes me to my maximum OCD abilities. When I think about doing a portrait, I think about the drawing and colors...not hair. Well, enough complaining. No one is going to shave their heads so I don't have to paint hair.
Step 1: I view hair like wave in the ocean. I look for directional lines that my brush will follow.
Step 2: I premix an average of six shades of hair color.
Step 3: Starting with the lightest color, I begin to fill in the directional lines (waves). I progressively add darker shades until finished. I consider it to be so tedious that I only work in short bursts, so it usually takes days to complete.
I have a long way to go with this model's hair. Right now I don't like the hair line. It is to dark. I need to soften the edges. Plus, I still have four shades of brown to do.
