I'm sorry that it has been a month and a half since my last blog. I was in a very bad place with that painting. I was not going to give up on it, so I worked a little every day. There are many, many tricks I have learned over the years to resolve watercolor problems. But they all take time. This post would be a lot simpler if I could figure out how to make a progressive video. Oh well. Instead, here is a progressive set of photos. I have a mind to call this the "Corona Portrait" because I worked on it throughout the corona lockdown.
All watercolor artists are students of their medium because there are always new problems to solve. No one ever learns it all. In this painting my problems stemmed around Winsor Newton's Neutral Black.I didn't use enough. Then I used too much and had to figure out how to remove it. If I put a color on top of it, it floated up and muddied the color. But then it also stained the paper in some areas and I couldn't remove it. Eventually I was forced to use a magic eraser. That smoothed the paper creating a slightly shinny strip of black.
In the end, which was today, I have done all I could do. I believe there is nothing more I can do and it looks pretty good. Hope you enjoy looking at it.
