I don't know any artists that likes to write artist statements...including me. Several years ago I came up with a good one for my figurative works but I have never needed one for the few paintings I do without figures. Today I had to revamp my statement to be relevant to the toilet paper painting. It is short and simple.
Art
has been my language of choice since finger painting in kindergarten. I
remember the feeling of joy and well-being that came over me then and continues
today.
I have always preferred my work to tell a
story. I focus on body language to do
that. It may involve the juxtapositioning of people and/or objects. It could also involve the relationship
between an object and its shadow. While I couldn’t put it into words for many
decades, the magic I want in my work is to have each composition ask a
question, leaving the viewer to answer it.
